About Adipong Brickshawana, MD, PhD
Biography
As a structural and interventional cardiologist, Dr. Brickshawana specializes in minimally invasive procedures to treat heart conditions. He has a particular interest in complex valvular heart disease, including aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation. His approach to patient care centers on listening to each patient, explaining treatment options clearly, and working together to develop a personalized care plan that aligns with patients' goals. Dr. Brickshawana is passionate about bringing the latest advances in cardiovascular medicine to patients to improve their quality of life, help them live longer, healthier lives and return to the activities that matter most to them.
Why did you become a provider? I became a physician because I wanted to combine my interest in science with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. Cardiology allows me to do that by helping patients navigate serious health conditions and improve their quality of life. I am especially drawn to structural heart disease because advances in minimally invasive treatments can make a profound difference for patients, helping them stay healthier, live longer and continue doing the things they love.
Why did you join UnityPoint Health? I was drawn to UnityPoint Health in part because of my connection to the Midwest. I spent several formative years at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where I completed my graduate studies in Biomedical research. Returning to the Midwest feels like a meaningful homecoming, and I am excited to serve the Cedar Rapids community with my training in structural and interventional cardiology to help patients with complex heart conditions. I value building lasting relationships with my patients and contributing to a community that values compassionate, high-quality care.
Describe your medical specialties/special interests and how they benefit patients: My special interests include structural heart disease and coronary artery disease, with expertise in procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for aortic stenosis, transcatheter mitral valve repair (MitraClip), patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to treat coronary artery blockages. These procedures offer less invasive treatment options for appropriately selected patients, often allowing for faster recovery and helping patients return to their daily activities sooner. In particular, advances in structural heart interventions can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life for patients with conditions such as severe aortic stenosis. I am passionate about offering these advances to patients in the Cedar Rapids community and helping each patient understand their options so we can choose the treatment best suited to their needs.
Describe a typical patient: My patients are typically adults with cardiovascular conditions such as aortic stenosis, other heart valve diseases or coronary artery disease. Many are seeking treatment for symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest discomfort, fatigue or reduced ability to participate in their usual activities. I also care for patients who may benefit from minimally invasive procedures, such as TAVR, MitraClip, PFO closure, or coronary angioplasty and stenting. My goal is to help each patient understand their condition and treatment options, preserve their independence and improve their quality of life through personalized, compassionate care.
What would your patients say about you as a provider? I hope my patients would describe me as someone who listens, takes the time to understand their concerns and makes them feel comfortable asking questions. I believe the best medical decisions are made together, with patients fully understanding their condition and treatment options and having an active role in choosing the approach that best fits their goals and values. I enjoy getting to know my patients, building lasting relationships and earning their trust through compassionate, personalized care.
What is the most important thing for people to know about you and your practice? The most important thing to know about my practice is that advanced medical technology and compassionate, personalized care go hand in hand. I am passionate about the latest advances in structural and interventional cardiology, including minimally invasive treatments that can improve symptoms, quality of life, and life expectancy for patients with serious heart conditions. Equally important, I believe every patient deserves to be heard, understand their treatment options, and be an active partner in decisions about their care. My goal is to combine the best of modern cardiovascular medicine with a personal approach that helps patients feel informed, supported and confident in their care.
What is the ideal provider-patient relationship? I believe the ideal provider-patient relationship is built on trust, open communication and mutual respect. Patients should feel comfortable sharing their concerns, asking questions and participating in decisions about their care. My role is to listen, explain medical conditions and treatment options clearly, and help patients make informed decisions that align with their goals and values. Ultimately, I want my patients to feel that we are working together as a team, with a shared goal of improving their health and helping them live longer, healthier lives.
Is there anything else that you feel is important for patients or referring providers/staff to know about your medical philosophy? I believe providing the best cardiovascular care requires a collaborative approach that puts patients at the center of the team. I value strong partnerships with referring providers and am committed to keeping them informed and involved throughout the evaluation, treatment and follow-up process. Clear communication and continuity of care are essential to ensuring patients feel supported at every step of their journey. My goal is to work closely with patients, their families and their healthcare teams to provide thoughtful, personalized care and achieve the best possible outcomes.
What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy checking out new restaurants and exploring the area. I also enjoy going to the gym and enjoy cycling and swimming when I have the opportunity. I enjoy discovering local favorites, spending time outdoors, and connecting with the people who make this community special.
Do you have any notable ties to the region? I feel connected to the Midwest, having attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and completed my graduate studies and research training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. I made many lasting friendships during those years, and many of my friends still live in the Midwest. Being in this region feels like a natural fit.
Describe your family: I am originally from Thailand, and my parents and extended family all live there. Although I’m currently living away from home, I value staying connected with my family while building my career here in the Midwest.
